“Democracy is a messy thing,” says Amy Goodman. The Democracy Now! host revisits her controversial arrest while covering a protest at the 2008 RNC. She praises social media sites like YouTube and Twitter as guardians of free speech.

In the Gallery: Amy Goodman and Denis Moynihan talk about Breaking The Sound Barrier. Amy Goodman, award-winning host of the daily internationally broadcast radio and television program “Democracy Now”, breaks through the corporate media’s lies, sound bites, and silence in this wide-ranging new collection of articles.
In place of the usual suspects—the “experts” who, in Goodman’s words, “know so little about so much, explain the world to us, and get it so wrong”—this accessible, lively collection allows the voices the corporate media exclude and ignore to be heard loud and clear.
From community organizers in New Orleans, to the courageous American soldiers who’ve said “No” to Washington’s wars, to the victims of torture and police violence, we are given the extraordinary opportunity to hear ordinary people standing up and speaking out. – Book Passage
Amy Goodman is the host and executive producer of Democracy Now!. She is co-author of the national best-seller The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media that Love Them written with her brother David Goodman.
Democracy Now! is a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program airing on over 300 stations in North America.Pioneering the largest public media collaboration in the U.S., Democracy Now! is broadcast on Pacifica, community, and National Public Radio stations, public access cable television stations, satellite television (on Free Speech TV, channel 9415 of the DISH Network), shortwave radio and the internet.

if this doesn’t stop there is going to be a backlash and people are going to get hurt. This is what it is like to go to in a hand-basket.

Yet another sad …
Yet another sad story. I hope that you all realize that if stuff like this takes place openly, democracy in America is dead. You’ve lost. Game over. I’ll wager a large sum of money that the next thing we’ll see is that reporters and commentators working, as Ms. Goodman is, to promote democracy and the rights of ordinary people will start being arrested on charges terrorism and what not. This is what happened in Latin America and there is no reason it shouldn’t happen in the US. Be safe all

My comment is a response to toddholladay’s concerns about the language people use in defense of Amy Goodman.

Possibly because …
Possibly because Amy Goodman deservedly has the admiration of many. She is the most brave, bold, intelligent reporter that i am aware of. It is incredibly cynical and crass to look at the arrest of Ms. Goodman and her colleagues as if she were whining about free speech and free press. She is a very strong, matter-of-fact, intelligent woman not to be messed with.

Thats how you arrest someone by putting their arms around their back? Why is that so bad. What a whiner press have to obey orders.

An excellent …
An excellent analysis of an example of political and media suppression. As Amy says the media must be free. Yes, democracy can be a messy thing but why not do something about it? The people who cant …
The people who cant understand how the Press is serving Democracy are doomed to live under the rule of Tyranny. Wake up people! This is a major blow to our freedom as a nation. This is not an isolated event. Police are suppressing the truth all over the US. Dont be blind. Democracy is not a spectator sport. Get involved for own sake.

Yeah, those “peacenik pussies” in Maguindanao, Philippines sure got what they deserved, didn’t they? What about the journalists that were killed by Indonesia in it’s invasion of East Timor back in 1975? Amy Goodman was beaten in 1991 while covering a Timorese demonstration which ended up being The Santa Cruz Massacre. Did those “peacenik pussies” at Kent State get what was coming to them for protesting against the U.S. invasion of Cambodia. You must want state run media in your country, right?

Not really. …
Not really. Soldiers on the battlefield are confronted by other soldiers with guns and typically, in order to subdue them, they have to kill them. Police aim to subdue unarmed demonstrators but they typically don’t have to kill them to do it – though sometimes they do that anyway. There’s the difference.

This is the equivalent of having a disagreement with a hotal vallet, and asking for his manager. But instead of getting his manager he calls the police.

My guess? They were thinking that “zero tolerance” means people must be obedient and conformist, and that we’ve become a country so concerned with security and safety that beating potential malcontents is okay as long it keeps the boogiemen terrorists away.
