This Week In Social Media – Simon Mainwaring on This Week in Social Media–Live Pilot

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

0:00-1:00 We’re here today on the This Week in Social Media pilot episode!
1:00-1:45 My guest today is Simon Mainwaring of We First (wefirstbranding.com).
1:45-3:00 Tell us about your recent work with charitable organizations and how that shifted your thoughts on branding, Simon.
3:00-4:00 So far big businesses haven’t done spectacularly well, have they? Are there any examples of companies really doing a great job in social media?
4:45-9:00 Are there any examples of companies who were lagging behind and are now struggling to catch up?
9:00-10:30 So if you attempt to control the conversation too much, you’re inevitably going to get backlash, right?
10:30-12:30 When you say the company needs to become human, you mean that there’s no single individual behind the brand? Is that a big shift for some companies?
12:30-13:30 It’s interesting that companies are now hiring Chief Listening Officers, just to make sure the customers are being heard.
13:30-17:45 You bring up the notion of trust a lot in your book. I think this stems from a brand’s desire to over-control the message. What are your thoughts?
17:45-19:30 So one message to brands is that you have to participate or your voice will be lost, right?
19:30-20:15 We’re taking a look at the top trends on Twitter this week–the Jersey Shore, Justin Bieber and Harry Potter all made the list.
20:15-21:15 How does a big brand work itself into these conversations?
21:15-23:30 Simon talks about how Mountain Dew crowd-sourced the selection of their new flavors and how Levi’s crowd-sourced the selection of their new brand faces.
23:30-25:30 Will social media prompt brands to act in a more ethical fashion?
25:30-27:00 I hear a lot of CEOs who say that Twitter just isn’t for them. What do you say to those people?
27:00-29:00 So what’s the best way to get started? What do you tell a company to do first?
29:00-31:00 How does a company establish what they stand for as a brand? How do they define it?
31:00-33:00 People have been using Twitter as a means of organization when other communication methods aren’t available. What are your thoughts on this?
33:00-34:45 In my opinion, Facebook has given us a big reason to be distrustful of their service, and now Google has walked in and positioned themselves as a hero.
34:45-36:30 Simon: We are now in the data trading businesses. Look at someone like Lady Gaga launching her own Little Monsters social network.
36:30-38:15 I think the shift is that we, as consumers, can now demand an equal amount of privacy.
38:15-41:00 So consumers are going to re-seize control of the conversation? How?
41:00-41:15 Thank you for joining us today Simon!

Social Media Etiquette — Questions and Answers

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

What do you think about social media etiquette? Common sense tells us that etiquette can be useful, but some argue that the lack of it has added to the success of social media.

Pamela Eyring, the President and Director of The Protocol School of Washington, believes that it is necessary for professional purposes. As she explains, social media can be very effective for consumers and businesses, but one wrong move can cause a very harmful impact.

She advises users to consider how their actions on social sites reflect on their own brand or image. By taking this into consideration before a user posts, he has a better chance of avoiding pitfalls.

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Viewer advisory: This program contains explicit language.

Wine Library TV’s Gary Vaynerchuk gives his no-holds-barred take on how modern businesses must adapt to thrive in a social media-driven culture.

—–

On November 5, L2 and NYU Stern hosted its second-annual Innovation Forum at The Morgan Library in New York City. The full-day event addressed innovation in digital marketing and implications for prestige brands.

L2 Forums are the largest gatherings of prestige professionals in North America. Forums draw C-level executives and top marketing and digital talent from prestige brands; leading agencies, media, and technology firms; and innovators and academics. In addition, 25 percent of seats are reserved for students from the nation’s top business and arts graduate programs.

Gary Vaynerchuk was born in Babruysk, U.S.S.R. (today Belarus) on November 14, 1975 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1978. He graduated from Mount Ida College in Newton, MA. From a platform as co-owner and Director of Operations of Wine Library, a wine retail shop in Springfield, New Jersey, Vaynerchuk gained fame as the host of Wine Library TV, a daily internet webcast on the subject of wine.

Called the “king of social media”, he is one of the first Facebook users to max out his friend limit, with over 17,000 pending friend requests. He is in the top 100 people followed on Twitter and was the keynote speaker at events like the 2009 South by Southwest Interactive conference and the New Media and Web 2.0 expos.

Making Social Media Worth Your While

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Is social media really worth all the effort? That’s the question that many CEOs ask their marketing teams. It’s hard for the C-level executives to understand where the true value of social lies since the results take time and are not always in dollar amounts.
