0:00-1:00 On This Week in Social Media we’re talking about People Power with Mark Pesce and Brad McCarty.
1:00-1:30 Mark, how are things in Sydney?
1:30-4:15 Mark, you developed a whole world of virtual reality through VRML. How do you think we’ve ended up since the vision you had in the 1990s?
4:15-5:15 At one point, the tweets were moving faster than the storm (Hurricane Irene) itself.
5:15-7:00 Welcome to Brad, North American editor for The Next Web. How are things in Nashville?
7:00-8:30 Brad- I was looking at a story out of Indonesia this week about a woman who ran a social media campaign for an election in Indonesia and is now getting offers as a social media coach.
8:30-11:00 This week, we’re taking a look at MTV and their use of social media for the Movie Awards. Any reaction, Mark or Brad?
11:00-11:30 At that event, Beyonce broke the news of her pregnancy and generated more tweets per minute than any other world event, ever.
11:30-13:30 Even a year after the BP Deepwater Horizon incident, BP continues to lose in its social media efforts to rehabilitate the brand.
13:30-16:00 Doesn’t it seem strange that a head of PR wouldn’t use these tools themselves and be familiar with them?
16:00-17:00 Brad: Pitch me on Twitter. 140 characters or less is what I have time to read.
17:00-19:00 Marketers say they want to have a dialogue with their customers, but their dollars are still spent on traditional, one-sized media.
19:00-20:15 Mark: Guidelines are different than brands.
20:15-22:45 Icelandic citizens are currently crowdsourcing the re-write of their nation’s constitution. Mark, what are your thoughts on that?
22:45-26:45 Your role as a citizen in a western democracy is somewhat limited outside of voting. Will the democratization of media lead to a revitalization of democracy itself?
26:45-28:30 Brad, any perspectives on that on your end?
28:30-29:30 That raises the question: If our government institutions were created at a time when we were largely an agrarian population and information only spread as fast as news via horseback could.
29:30-32:30 There was a report this week about the mayor of a town in Syria who took to YouTube to bypass government controls.
32:30-33:45 Mark: We have people fact-checking with political aims and one of the outcomes of that process is that now there’s an extreme amount of caution with the mainstream media.
33:45-36:00 One of the companies at the core in driving the stake into the heart of old media is WikiLeaks.
36:00-38:15 Mark: There’s a correlation between the percentage of the population that has a mobile phone and whether they have access to the Internet and to their likelihood of a revolution.
38:15-40:30 The velocity at which information during revolutions can spread via Twitter and BlackBerry messenger is astounding.
40:30-41:00 It’s events like Beyonce’s baby bump and Justin Bieber’s new album that gets people familiar with the tools and then enables people to use them in social movements.
41:00-41:30 Thank you to Mark (@mpesce) and Brad (@bradmccarty). And be sure to follow us on Twitter @TWiSocialMedia and on Facebook at TWiSocialMedia.

Join our new mailing list and be the first to learn about upcoming guests! Go to thisweekin.com/email.
0:00-1:00 Today, on This Week in Social Media, we’ll cover the latest from uber-social network Facebook and also dive into the world of social TV viewing.
1:00-2:00 First up we have Marshall Kirkpatrick from ReadWriteWeb to talk to us about Facebook’s big changes.
2:00-4:00 There’s also been a massive change to the Facebook profile look, yes?
4:00-5:00 What about big media? We heard from Netflix this week that they won’t be integrating in the US. What’s your take on this?
5:00-6:00 Thanks for joining us today, Marshall. Everyone remember to follow him on Twitter @marshallk.
6:00-6:45 Also joining us today is Mike Bracco, product manager at Mahalo, who will be previewing the Facebook changes for us.
6:45-7:45 And you have control over that image as a user?
7:45-8:30 Tell us a bit about the mapping feature.
8:30-9:00 So what’s the biggest new integration that Facebook has made?
9:00-9:30 Mike, thanks so much for taking us on that tour. Everyone remember to follow him on Twitter @bracco.
9:30-10:15 We’ve got a start studded panel this week: Somrat Niyogi of Miso, Fraser Kelton of GetGlue and Gabriele Gresta of Digital Magics and Bibop. Where are you coming from today, Fraser?
10:15-11:30 What’s happening at Miso and where are you, Somrat?
11:30-13:00 So today we’re talking about social TV and the advent of connected viewing. It seems like GetGlue has positioned themselves as a leader in the space, is that true?
13:00-14:00 So most people are checking in through their mobile devices?
14:00-15:00 Somrat, tell me a bit about what makes Miso similar or different from GetGlue?
15:00-18:00 So the distinction is that GetGlue is about the check-in, while Miso is doubling down on television?
18:00-18:30 And Somrat and Fraser, you both launched last year?
18:30-21:00 Gabriele, you’ve been involved in this space for quite some time, yes? Tell us what you’re doing these days in the interactive TV space, Gabriele?
21:00-22:45 So the differentiator is that the person producing or switching the TV show can actually roll in all of the social media live?
22:45-24:30 Fraser or Somrat, are there plans to include this “in-line” viewing functionality on your platforms?
24:30-26:00 What’s the typical adoption pattern for GetGlue users?
26:00-27:00 Gabriele, what’s the partnership process like with broadcasters?
27:00-30:45 So you built that software specifically for someone in a control room to optimize that viewing process?
30:45-31:30 Gabriele, do you disagree? Should broadcasters welcome the social additions to the viewing experience?
31:30-32:00 And if you see that your friend is watching something on Facebook, does that definitely pique someone’s interest?
32:00-33:00 Fraser: As the builder of a product in this space, I think it’s important to remember that TV has always been inherently social.
33:00-35:00 Somrat, do you need the permission of the broadcaster to add this layer of content?
35:00-37:00 And Somrat, you’re doing that without any deep relationship with the content producers, yes? And this allows you to move faster?
37:00-37:45 Are tablets and phones the principal platforms?
37:45-40:00 So we can break this down into three steps: social discovery, social connection and contribution. Of those three, Gabriele, your company can do all three, is that correct?
40:00-42:00 News for the TV companies watching this show: get with the program fast, because other companies are creating social experiences with–or without–your permission.
42:00-45:00 What’s the threat in Facebook’s new announcement that they’re offering this integration as part of the new platform?
45:00-47:00 Somrat, given your connection to Google, you’ll certainly be integrating with Google+, yes?
47:00-48:00 Thank you to everyone for joining us today. Everyone make sure to follow all of our guests on Twitter.
48:00-48:30 We’d also love to hear from you: tweet us @TWiSocialMedia or find us on Facebook at facebook.com/twisocialmedia

Greg Jarboe, SEO-PR, interviews SES Chicago 2011 keynoter, Mikel Chertudi of Adobe Systems, who will speak on the following topic, multi-channel marketing and measurement.
Chertudi will present on multi-channel measurement and focus on consumer packaged goods (CPG) and retailers. He will give examples of what marketing and digital marketers should be doing to measure their attribution in a multichannel setting. Marketers will learn to measure ROI and to make money across all channels.
Right now, companies are taking measured, siloed approaches across all the different marketing channels, including digital marketing, search, display, tv/print, according to Chertudi, and companies all think that they don’t talk to each other. Companies don’t understand the spill-over effect and they might be double-counting across those different channels, incorrectly measuring their results.
Chertudi will explain how to correctly measure, attribute and optimize a company’s investment across all marketing channels.

Lisa Buyer, president of the Buyer Group, interviews Mel Carson, Microsoft Advertising Community Manager, Microsoft Advertising on the subject of social media and the marketing mix at SES London, 2011. According to Mel, social media is the Internet. Mel says this is because the Internet is inherently social. Whether it’s through search, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, forums, or any other social media platform, the Internet is inherently social. Mel says marketers should always consider a social veneer across all of their marketing and digital campaigns, because there is a social element inherent in any devise used, whether it is via mobile, TV, Web, including games, print and cinema. Mel also stresses the importance for marketers to optimize outside of event being marketed.
Marketers should always be incorporating digital photography, for example, and blogging, tweeting, in order to share the significance of their campaign with those who might not have been able to attend the event. Mel also talks about brand interaction and measuring the effect of social media in order to gauge its effectiveness. Mel calls this social interaction versus the social impressions and it’s the interactions that you’re looking to grow. For example, every tweet, every video that gets viewed, etc…gets tracked and after reviewing all of the social media engagement, Mel says a marketer is able to know that a certain amount of people have interacted with their brand. This builds upon the experience for those who want to learn more about the brand itself.
